Evening Standard British Film Awards – Winners

Hi Oscar. Hi BAFTA. It’s London calling once more and we seem to be understanding this whole Awards malarkey a lot better than you. Yes, we may have been slightly overshadowed by the London Critics who also awarded Fassbender and Colman, but hey, AT LEAST WE NOMINATED THEM. Oh, and recognition for We Need To Talk About Kevin? Yeah, we went there. And would it be too much to mention our love for Senna, The Guard and Weekend? Ok, we’ll stop there. Check out the full list of winners below:

London Film Critics’ Circle Award Winners

Anna Paquin. Wow. London truly has spoken and I am so, so thrilled for the team behind Margaret for this.

When the nominations were released I said how excited they made me. This was proved after the BAFTA shortlist was released and made me realise just how much more the LFCC, BIFA and The Evening Standard Film Awards seemed to be celebrating homegrown talented as opposed to the alleged BRITISH, BAFTAS.

But I must make the point that I am more than happy with all the love The Artist is getting – it’s utterly charming and I haven’t had a smile on my face that big in the cinema for a very long time. Check out the full list of winners below:

Evening Standard British Film Awards – Nominations

BAFTA, you really could have learned one or two things from these nominations. The fact that Best Supporting is rolled into Best Actor/Actress makes for some very interesting choices, very few of which are actually potential Oscar nominees – Branagh and Fassbender, Redgrave, Swinton and possibly Mulligan and Oldman if he’s exceptionally lucky after his pretty unexciting Awards season. But the one main difference is the three nominations for Joanna Hogg’s Archipelago, starring BAFTA Rising Star nominee, Tom Hiddleston. And hello to the overdue acting nods for Colman, Gleeson and Mullan. The addition of a ‘People’s Choice’ Award gives The Smurfs a chance to battle it out against Bridesmaids and Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. Tell Papa Smurf not to crack the champagne out just yet. 2011 London Film Critics’ Circle Award Nominations

I really like these nominations. Possibly more than any other batch so far, simply because the LFCC have been willing to think OUTSIDE THE BOX. It’s not a hard thing to do, but The Golden Globes (whose nominations I haven’t even posted) could seriously learn a thing or two here. Drive and Tinker Tailor lead the way and more recognition has been given to Margaret and A Separation. The best category has got to be Breakthrough British Filmmaker Of The Year – how would you even start to judge that?! Check out the full list of nominations below:
