Trailer Talk: My Big Fat Marvelgasm, Claymation Ghosts, The Hoff And Disney’s Attempt At Dubstep

I love this week’s selection of trailers, which you may find surprising seeing how I’ve actually been a little harsh towards some – very unlike me, I know. But there’s such a brilliant mix to choose from, including some great animation, thrillers, comedy and some not so great ones. But hey, that’s all part of the fun. This week Nadine and I look at (deep breath please) The Stath, the supernatural, that pesky John Carter again, more Marvel characters than you can shake a stick at, David Hasselhoff, Snoop Stiller, Adam Sandler’s weird career, a resurrected canine, little yellow minions, morticians, American Football, claymation ghosts, John McClane and Superman, coming of age indie quirkiness and Norwegian murders. Let’s talk trailers: Continue reading

Sundance London 2012 Line-Up

My heart is very heavy today. With all the excitement of Sundance London comes the crushing disappointment that I can’t go this year. But, for all of you who can or are going, the line-up for the first ever Sundance London has been announced. And it’s a bit of a cracker.

Held from the 26th-29th April (yep, next month), London’s O2 will be chockfull of music, panels, discussions and, most importantly, movies. And Robert actual Redford is going to be there, opening with ‘An Evening With Robert Redford And T Bone Burnett’ moderated by Nick Hornby. And Placebo are just one of the bands that have been announced so far. Remember when I told you my heart was heavy today…?! It’s an absolutely brilliant move, bringing it to London, and gives us (well, not me this year) a chance to see the films that we’ve heard so much about since the Americans had their Sundance in Park City, Utah, back in January.

14 of the 120 films shown in Park City will be shown in London and, although it’s a real shame Surrogates isn’t in there, it’s great to see such a brilliant selection of documentaries. Check out the full line-up below (all of the film descriptions are taken from the Sundance website, here): Continue reading

2012 Jameson Empire Film Awards – Nominations

Well, the people have spoken (the readers of Empire, that is) and chosen who they think worthy of making the shortlist for the 2012 Jameson Empire Awards. I have to be honest and say I’m more than a little surprised at the inclusion of Sam Claflin (after he was so fabulous in Any Human Heart) and Bonnie Wright (is she technically a newcomer after eight Potter movies?!), as well as Troll Hunter being considered a horror, but the lines have to blur somewhere I guess.

What the Empire Awards have the ability to do is nominate a massive mixture of films, allowing far more mainstream flicks the opportunity to walk away with the prizes. This is also clearly evident when noticing how The Artist and The Descendants are nowhere to be seen (because they were ineligible due to UK release dates, to be fair!), but Harry Potter, Attack The Block and Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes are the clear frontrunners.

The full list of nominees are below and all you need to do is click here to vote: Continue reading

Forget The Artist Winning Best Picture Last Sunday – Here’s My Top Ten Films Of 2011

I am well aware that everybody else posted their ‘Best Of 2011’ lists at, well, the end of 2011 or back in January, but I wanted to be a little different. Mainly because I still had a fair few films to catch up on and because I wanted to compare my list to what the Academy deemed ‘fit’ and what eventually won.

So, finally, I present to you my Top Ten Films Of 2011. And when I say ‘Top Ten’, I mean what I enjoyed most as opposed to what I think I should say to be congratulated on. No, this is my Top Ten and simply that. And I’m pretty sure a lot of you won’t see my #1 coming – unless you follow me on Twitter (@iamnotwaynegale) in which case you’ve probably known for a while!

So, as usual, please leave comments if you want to argue this thing out – you’ll definitely realise I’m a sucker for big performances as opposed to big films – and check out my Top Ten below, starting with the films that didn’t quite make the cut: Continue reading

2012 Saturn Awards – Nominees

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films has announced the nominees for this year’s Saturn Awards. Coming on the tail-end of the Oscars, they almost hold two fingers up to the Academy, nominating the sort of film that wouldn’t usually get a whiff of recognition, all leading to a rather interesting set of nominees. If the presence of Limitless, Thor and The Lincoln Lawyer doesn’t get you interested then there’s something wrong with you and check out that Best Supporting Actor category! However, I must warn you that Hugo has a vast dollop of nominations, but it’s alright when there’s so much love for Tintin and a nom for Attack The Block. Check out the full set of nominees below: Continue reading
