I am well aware that everybody else posted their ‘Best Of 2011’ lists at, well, the end of 2011 or back in January, but I wanted to be a little different. Mainly because I still had a fair few films to catch up on and because I wanted to compare my list to what the Academy deemed ‘fit’ and what eventually won.
So, finally, I present to you my Top Ten Films Of 2011. And when I say ‘Top Ten’, I mean what I enjoyed most as opposed to what I think I should say to be congratulated on. No, this is my Top Ten and simply that. And I’m pretty sure a lot of you won’t see my #1 coming – unless you follow me on Twitter (@iamnotwaynegale) in which case you’ve probably known for a while!
So, as usual, please leave comments if you want to argue this thing out – you’ll definitely realise I’m a sucker for big performances as opposed to big films – and check out my Top Ten below, starting with the films that didn’t quite make the cut: Continue reading

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films has announced the nominees for this year’s Saturn Awards. Coming on the tail-end of the Oscars, they almost hold two fingers up to the Academy, nominating the sort of film that wouldn’t usually get a whiff of recognition, all leading to a rather interesting set of nominees. If the presence of Limitless, Thor and The Lincoln Lawyer doesn’t get you interested then there’s something wrong with you and check out that Best Supporting Actor category! However, I must warn you that Hugo has a vast dollop of nominations, but it’s alright when there’s so much love for Tintin and a nom for Attack The Block. Check out the full set of nominees below: Continue reading

By this late stage we should all be completely used to The Artist sweeping. But at the Spirit Awards?! SERIOUSLY?! I have to say I’m more than a little shocked. I was so desperate to see Michael Shannon finally get what he thoroughly deserved last night, but Dujardin snatched it away. Again. And don’t even get me started on the Academy leaving him out….
On a far more positive note, 50/50 gave Will Reiser a long overdue triumph, Woodley’s win makes me extremely happy and it’s refreshing not to see a Streep win in sight, even if it would have been nice to see more love for Sean Durkin’s debut.
Anyway, check out the full list of Spirit winners below:

Central Ohio love Drive. They love Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling and I don’t blame them. I just wish more Associations and Societies were brave enough to give it the attention it deserves. Away from Drive’s wins here, check out the Best Actress category and cheeky little wins for Source Code and Hanna. As ever, check out the full list of winners below: Continue reading

Time to move to Canada. Vancouver have constructed their noms a little differently, opting for a less conventional three in each category (aside from Best Documentary and Best Screenplay). This has resulted in the inclusion of Fassbender and Shannon alongside Dujardin, with Olsen replacing what can only have been Swinton’s slot. We also see Melissa McCarthy pop up once more for Bridesmaids. I’m still a little confused by this… Check out the full list of nominees below: Continue reading
