Sundance 2012 Film Festival Awards

Ahhh, Sundance. The Festival I wish I knew more about to make me sound cooler. This was the first year I’ve watched the Awards and it definitely gives you a real sense of the incredible humility and appreciation every single recipient had for the opportunity to even be considered as an applicant – something that a lot of other ceremonies could learn a lot from. Speeches were requested to remain short so that everyone could meet in the bar afterwards and amongst them came the gem, “thank you and have a lot of sex”, from one of the screenwriters of Young & Wild. Priceless.

The unfortunate illness Parker Posey was struck down with led to a rather off the cuff, spontaneous show thanks to John Cooper (who could be Ed Helms’ flamboyant brother) and Katie Aselton, but the 2012 Awards weren’t all sweetness and light due to a very moving tribute to the late Bingham Ray that opened the ceremony. Cooper struggled to keep it together, proving what an incredibly supportive family Sundance is and how they look after their own, Ray’s ‘poker partners’ providing anecdotes for the tribute.

Some very interesting projects and impressive talents were brought to the forefront during this year’s Festival and I pray we get to see a lot of them achieve distribution. Oh, and lastly, Malik Bendjelloul may be my new favourite person.
